How to avoid quiting Parallels Desktop with Mac OS X Keyboard System Shortcut “Cmd+Q”

I work most of my day with Parallels Desktop on Mac OS X because one the tool I mainly use is only available on Windows.

I use multiple shortcuts in that applications and sometime I misstep and touch the “Cmd+Q” OS X system shortcut and then Parallels quits. While you do not loose your document, it is very annoying as you need to restart the virtual machine all over again.

To prevent this I suggest two things:

  1. In the Keyboard OS X Preferences Pane under Keyboard Shortcuts assign “Quit Parallels Desktop” to a shortcut you will never use.

  2. Under the Parallels Keyboard Preferences, to avoid disabling the Mac OS X systems shortcuts, just reassign the Cmd+Q to a shortcut you will never use.

You should be good to go from there.
